a poem for english class.
sal408:
I come from a foreign land
Everything here is new, nothing is bland
I’ll settle down here, start a new life
Make a new family, kids and a wife
Where I am now I have freedom of speech
I can go swimming, without fear of land mines on the beach
The people around me are friendly and kind
With friendship in their hearts and acceptance in their minds
I’ve been to other countries that call themselves accepting
And yet they made decisions based upon my ethnic up-bringing
In those places I dared not take a step outside
For fear of being derided and demonised
But I have left those countries behind
Left their racism and hatred out of my mind
Where I am now I feel safe and secure
The men I used to fear now seem powerless and obscure
